The Old Bones

Ask any grandmother and, with a knowing grin, she’ll tell you the tale. After the gods at last threw down the Enemy, they played dice with his bones, and where these fell, they became mountains. These mountains. The Old Bones.

This is an experiment in map-first worldbuilding: a map to inspire the world it depicts. You'll find three downloads:

• A fantasy map filled with mysterious names, each accompanied by an allusive hook.
• A one-page PDF that offers a set of answers to some of these mysteries by giving the setting a possible history. You may give it another.
• An unlabeled version of the base map, for those who wish to imagine something new, starting from a cleaner slate.

This project emerged from a D&D campaign in 2023 while A Tower Made of Sky was in development. Some of the worldbuilding ideas from this map made it into that larger project.
